Honor and Remember Flag Presentation

Back in Februrary 2011, the Treasurer's Office raised enough money to sponsor a “Honor and Remember” flag to a fallen soldier’s family from Chesapeake. The flag was presented during the 2011 Freedom Festival held at the Chesapeake City Park.

The flag was presented to the family of a soldier who was one of the 29 fallen Navy Seals killed in the deadly helicopter crash in August 2011. The soldier was Special Warfare Operator Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Kevin A. Houston, 35, of West Hyannisport, Mass. Below, Mrs. Carraway helped present the flag to his widow, Meiling Houston, who lives here in Chesapeake with their two sons and daughter.

Mr. and Mrs. Carraway (Chesapeake City Treasurer) recently participated in the Sentara Village Assisted Living Memorial Service on May 27^th. During this annual memorial service, each resident who has passed away in the previous year is recognized and remembered. Mrs. Carraway provided the opening invocation and Mr. Carraway was a keynote speaker. Both thoroughly enjoyed participating in the lovely service (pictures taken by Mrs. Carraway).

2011 Easter Egg Fundraiser

Many of you may not be aware of the Treasurer’s Community Fund Organization, but it is a non-profit organization created by Barbara Carraway, City Treasurer, to help those living in our community who may be in need. One project they take on every Christmas is to provide a wonderful experience to children who otherwise might wake up to nothing on Christmas morning. This past Christmas, they were able to help 13 families by providing toys, school supplies, clothing, food, and even Christmas decorations. In one instance, we even helped the family with their electrical bill. This is truly a wonderful organization.

Each year the Treasurer’s Office holds its annual Easter Egg project, a fundraiser for the Treasurer’s Community Fund. The Office recently completed the project for 2011 and wanted to share with you some pictures. The event was an absolute success, with many volunteers and organizations donating time or supplies to the efforts. Check out some of the pictures below to get a feel for how work intensive this fundraiser can be (each egg is individually shaped, dipped and decorated).

Don't forget the annual chocolate covered creme Easter Egg fundraiser!! Today and tomorrow are the last days to order (call 757-382-6764) and eggs will be ready for pickup on Monday, April 18th. You can pay by cash or check when you collect the eggs, and can do so at any of our four locations.

Large personalized eggs are $6 (a half pound of yumm) and $8 for a dozen smaller bite-sized eggs. Large egg flavors are: Butter Creme, Cherry Nut, Peanut Butter, Coconut, and Pecan Creme. Small egg flavors are: Butter Creme, Cherry Nut, Peanut Butter, Coconut, Pecan Creme, Maple Nut, Orange, Chocolate Creme, and Strawberry. For small eggs you may designate the number you would like of each flavor (Ex. 2-Butter Creme, 6-Coconut, and 4-Orange = 1 dozen eggs) or choose to live dangerously and opt for the random assortment.

Remember, all proceeds benefit the Treasurer's Community Fund, helping disadvantaged families right here in our Chesapeake community! Last year we helped 13 families have an amazing Christmas-- providing food, Christmas decorations, school supplies, clothes, and toys to kids who otherwise may have woken up to nothing Christmas morning.

Feb. 4th Fundraiser for the "Honor and Remember" organization

On Friday, February 4th- the Treasurer’s Office held a luncheon/bake sale fundraiser for the “Honor and Remember” organization. Herbs Hot Dogs donated hotdogs, Mary Jane Bread donated buns, and the general manager from Wendys at 241 S. Battlefield Blvd. donated chili, crackers, containers and spoons. Because of their generous efforts and the hard work of the Treasurer's Office staff, this event was an enormous success! The office now has enough money to donate a personalized “Honor and Remember” flag to the immediate family of a fallen soldier from this area. For the second year in a row, the Chesapeake City Symbol Committee participated in a gift wrapping session to raise additional money for its scholarship program. Committee members Barbara Carraway, Dawn Matheson and volunteer, Wendy Roenker, wrapped gifts at the Greenbrier Barnes and Noble Bookstore on December 17, 2010. B & N patrons got their purchases wrapped with artistic style while they learned more about the City Symbol. The event was fun and a great opportunity for the Committee to interact with Chesapeake's citizens.

This year, the Treasurer’s Office spread some holiday cheer by participating in the city wide Christmas sing-a-long. Our own Emily Roenker coordinated the effort, chose our office’s song, “Let it Snow,” and made us matching scarves for the occasion. The recording has already concluded, and the clips will air on WCTV a number of times in December (WCTV is Cox Channel 48 or Verizon Channel 43).

Another Successful Run of the "Tax Taxi"

The Treasurer's Office experiences a high volume of traffic during the June tax due dates. As the parking lots fill up, citizens have to park farther from the entrance to the building. To combat this problem, the Treasurer's Office offered the Tax Taxi shuttle service on June 4th and June 7th. This free service allows citizens, especially those who have difficulty walking, a ride from the parking lots to the entrance of the Municipal Building.

The golf cart was provided by the Department of Parks and Recreation. The volunteer "Taxi Drivers" were from Great Bridge Presbyterian Church.

New Dropbox Location

If a tax due date falls on a holiday or weekend, the due date automatically extends to the next business day.

The next tax payment date is June 5th, which falls on a Saturday. Therefore, the payment must be paid or postmarked no later than Monday, June 7th.

Some BUNNY Loves You at the Treasurer's Office

The Easter Egg project raises money each year for the Treasurer's Office Community Fund. Through this fund, we were able to provide local Chesapeake schools with over one thousand dollars worth of school supplies. The Treasurer’s Community Fund also helped fifty- two children and three senior citizens this past year during the Christmas season (see December 2009 blog post).The Easter egg project is the annual fundraiser for the Treasurer's Community Fund, "Christmas for the Children Program".

This project was a success because of the generous support we received from volunteers and local business.

Ingredients were donated from the Chesapeake area Food Lions, Walmart, Sam's Club and Sysco. Local businesses RK Chevrolet and Priority Chevrolet graciously made monetary donations to purchase additional ingredients. Volunteers from the Chesapeake community generously donated their time, some volunteers worked over 10 hours a day making eggs. As a reward for their hard work, lunch and dinner were provided by Chanello's, Domino's, McDonald's, Subway, Herb's Hot Dogs and Chesapeake Pizza. Flower's Bakery let us borrow bread tray's to store the eggs while they were being made, and Wendy's and Harris Teeter provided the plastic containers used to package the eggs for delivery.

New Payment Drop Box Location

The payment drop box for the Great Bridge Treasurer's Office will be moved from in front of the Municipal Building to the entrance of visitor parking on Conquest Drive by Monday, April 5, 2010. Changing the location of the drop box allows taxpayers to stay in their vehicles, eliminating the safety hazard of crossing the street and facilitating the flow of traffic. Thank you to Melvin Wiggins and the staff in Facilities Management for helping with this project.

On February 6, 2010 I was honored to be named the Women's Division Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce's Woman of the Year 2009. What an honor.

I want to thank everyone that attended the banquet and have supported my community service projects over the years. I especially want to thank the Carraway cousins who traveled for serval hours to be with me and a former employee, Liz Spradling, and her husband, Tom, who braved the snowy roads to drive down from DC. Dispite the weather, the banquet was well attended. The blue and white theme added to an amazing banquet.

46 Children Helped Through the Treasurer's Christmas for Children Program

Each year the City Treasurer, Barbara O. Carraway, spearheads the "Christmas for Children" program. Mrs. Carraway contacts several Chesapeake schools to request the names of families needing assistance. The program also lends a helping hand to area senior citizens by providing food baskets and/or food gift cards.

This year we were able to help 46 children.

Each family is carefully selected so we can help the families with the greatest hardship. Mrs. Carraway and various members of the Treasurer's office staff do the shopping for each of these families individually.

Our goal is to provide each child in the family with Christmas gifts consisting of a new outfit of clothes, shoes, toys, games, books, and food. We also buy the wrapping paper, bows, and stockings

Parents come in and wrap their children’s gifts so that they have a sense of contributing.

Several families have been overwhelmed with emotion when they see the magnitude of the gifts. It is a blessing beyond words to experience the joy and thankfulness expressed from each family – to help take them from “hopelessness” to “hopefulness”.

We would like to thank all of the local businesses and citizens of Chesapeake that helped contribute to the Christmas for Children program. The Treasurer partnered with the Olive Garden who provided three families with a full dinner. Bake Fresh provided muffins, brownies and cookies for the families. Mrs. Carraway also partnered with Terry Ruby, Vice President of Fulton Bank, who contributed enough money to pay off a delinquent power bill for one family.

Your generosity made Christmas possible for families that would otherwise not have had anything for Christmas. We appreciate you!

Did you know...

- Dogs/cats that are four months old or older are required to have a license.

- The deadline to purchase a license is December 31 of each year.

- The license is valid for one calendar year (January through December). Animal licenses are purchased annually and expire December 31 of each year.

-The fine for “Failure to Obtain a License” is $25 plus court costs.

Catching a Ride on Tax Taxi

The inaugural run of the Tax Taxi received rave reviews from taxpayers!

On September 29th and 30th the Chesapeake Treasurer's Office started a new program affectionately named the "Tax Taxi." If you have ever been to the Chesapeake Municipal building you probably noticed that visitor parking is a considerable distance from the entrance of the City municipal building. On busy tax due dates visitor parking fills up fast and forces citizens to park farther and farther away. We have had citizens, many of them senior citizens, experience difficulty walking this distance. In response to this problem, the Treasurer’s office started the Tax Taxi shuttle service. This FREE service provides citizens a ride between the parking lot and the entrance of the municipal building.

We anticipate another taxi run on December 30th and December 31st.

Volunteer taxi drivers were courtesy of Great Bridge Presbyterian Church and the golf cart was graciously supplied by the Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Department.

Let your imaginations take flight!! Chesapeake has a new flock of Blue Herons that are just waiting to be painted, collaged, bejeweled or bedazzled! The Blue Heron Committee is currently looking for artists to add new designs to their current collection. Interested artists will be provided with a sketch of the blue heron to illustrate their artistic design. Submissions will be reviewed for approval by the Committee.
